Premonitions by Frank McRae fits the mold of a typical crime novel with a paranormal twist. The story takes place in Winnetka, Illinois just before Thanksgiving. It follows the crime spree of a serial killer that is dubbed “The Plastic Wife Murderer” by the news, but prefers to go by Nemesis. Each murder is exactly the same: the wife of a well-known plastic surgeon is found mutilated and murdered in their home. The police, FBI, and other investigators can’t figure out how the perp is getting in and out of the homes without leaving a trace of evidence. Not to mention the security systems are all secured. While the police use their methods of solving the crimes, Dr. Baker begins receiving messages from an unlikely source. With five women down, will the killer be caught before he kills again?
The story itself is creative and intriguing. McRae has found a way to put an interesting twist on the typical serial killer story. The messages from beyond the grave are just a start to the surprise twist that he adds towards the end. I have no doubt that McRae has more unique stories up his sleeve.
The reader is able to enjoy the story from different points of view and create a better image of the action taking place. I think this is a good element to the story.
McRae doesn’t hold back in describing the extent of mutilations to the bodies, so I would not recommend this book to young readers. Crime buffs would appreciate the plot of this book. I’d be curious to see if anyone sees the twist coming at the end.
